Events and Activities Planned from May 14th – May 18th to Encourage Drinking Healthy Beverages

Berkeley, California (Thursday, May 10, 2018) - Come to one of a series of events Berkeley Public Health is hosting to help community members re-think whether to consume sugar sweetened beverages, which can lead to poor health such as diabetes and obesity.

Through our interactive activities and events to learn about community programs or services, we hope we'll help people make simple changes to everyday habits that will lead to better health.  

We are also hoping that people will make an online pledge to reduce their consumption of these drinks as part of a statewide day of action on May 16 to raise awareness and highlight the importance of drinking healthy beverages.

Water is a healthy beverage. Energy drinks, boba teas and sodas are not.

From Monday, May 14 to Friday, May 18, come join events or participate in activities that encourage health and wellness, including:

Rethink Your Drink Fair
Wednesday, May 16, 11 AM - 4 pm
Civic Center Park
2151 Martin Luther King Jr. Way

The Rethink Your Drink Fair will include community resource tables and demonstrations on how to replace sugary beverages with unsweetened options or water. At noon and again at 3:30 pm, Healthy Black Families will lead participants in a Soul Line Dance and Flash Mob, a short choreographed physical activity designed to get everyone moving while having fun. In addition, we will host a community walk to Ohlone Park.  Throughout the fair, sample a variety of infused waters and cheer on your favorite as a panel of experts judge the winner of the Spa Water Contest.

Additional activities on the Rethink Your Drink Calendar  include:

  • Tuesday, May 15th at 6pm: Berkeley City Council Meeting presentation of Proclamation for May 16th "Rethink Your Drink Day" and "Rethink Your Drink Week." 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
  • Wednesday May 16th at 12 noon: Sing along with seniors about the importance of water with representatives of the YMCA of the East Bay. South Berkeley Senior Center, 2939 Ellis St.
  • Wednesday, May 16 at 11:30am.  Join a City of Berkeley dietician for brief health presentations on the importance of healthy beverages and how you can make the switch to healthier options. North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave.
  • Thursday, May 17th from 11-12: Power your own smoothie on the Smoothie Bike on Sacramento Market, 2974 Sacramento Street.

Throughout the year, there are small changes that you can make to reduce your consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. Make water your default beverage of choice. Learn how to read food labels and feel confident that you are choosing a healthy alternative.  Join us in making a public pledge to reduce consumption of sugary drinks. 

Beverages account for almost half of all added sugars consumed by the US population. In 2015, Berkeley implemented the nation's first tax on the distribution of sugar sweetened beverages.  The tax has been credited with encouraging the purchase of healthier beverages in Berkeley and has raised over $5 million in revenue that the city has reinvested to promote health through community grants and public health campaigns.
