Bicycling in Berkeley is easier, thanks to a number of projects in the past year. Key corridors funneling people to and from the UC Berkeley campus now have bike lanes that better protect bicyclists by using parked cars as a physical barrier. Check out Hearst Avenue, Bancroft Way and Fulton Street alongside the campus.

The city also partnered with Oakland, Emeryville Transportation Bike to Workand the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to create a 24/7 bike sharing network across the cities, improving equity along with access to mass transit.  Berkeleyans participated in a series of physical and online events to select stations across the city and ensure that the needs of underserved communities were also met.

Berkeley has the highest percentage of bike commuters (  9.7%) for cities with a population over 100,000 in the United States, according to the most recent data provided by the US Census Bureau,. That's more than four times the Alameda County average and nearly five times the Bay Area average.

Berkeley is bicycling town. Join us Thursday, the month of May, and all year in helping keep Berkeley as a model city for biking and bicyclists - locally, nationally, and globally. Use the hashtag #bikeberkeley on Twitter, and we'll retweet the best photos from @CityofBerkeley.
