Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 21, 2018) - Come learn about new initiatives to improve the City's Streetlight and Stormwater systems and the fees required to do so.

The proposed fee increases would pay for improved lighting as well as to clean and temper the flow of stormwater -  rainwater that flows down City streets and empties out into our creeks and Bay.

Created in 1982 and 1991, respectively, streetlight and storm water fees haven't been changed since. But environmental requirements to treat the water flowing into our waterways, as well as a desire to better illuminate City streets have increased.

Attend one of our community meetings, learn about these issues and ask questions:

  • The state of the City's Stormwater system and how it impacts issues such as flooding and water quality in our creeks, Bay and other waterways.
  • Our Streetlight program and community concerns about safety and traffic
  • Funding sources and their condition

Each meetings will have the same information and be from 6:30-8:30pm on the following dates:

Adopted in in 1991, the City's Clean Stormwater Fee pays for programs that minimize flooding and improve the quality of storm water.  In Berkeley's 10 square miles, the City storm system contains 93 miles of pipes that catch rain water and funnel it to the Creeks and Bay. The maintenance of this system includes elements that reduce flooding and remove pollutants from storm water, as well as protect drinking water, fish and wildlife.

Starting in 1982, the Streetlight Program was adopted to add and maintain new and existing streetlights, which improves safety for bicyclists and pedestrians and reduces vehicular traffic accidents.  The City replaces damaged poles, pays utilities, and adds new lights.

Come join us and learn about the City's Stormwater and Streetlight programs. Read more online. If you have any questions, email Anjanette Scott or call at 981-6317.
