Berkeley, California (Thursday, December 21, 2017) - On December 18, 2017 at 11:32pm, Berkeley Police Officers responded to the 3100 block of San Pablo Ave for what appeared to be a hit and run collision.  Arriving Officers located a victim down in the roadway with life threatening injuries. The responsible vehicle was not on scene when Officers arrived. The Berkeley Fire Department transported the victim to a local hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. San Pablo Avenue was closed to through traffic for over 7 hours during the investigation.

Further investigation revealed that prior to the collision the victim was involved in a physical altercation with two other suspects. Investigators learned the victim had been brutally assaulted by two suspects who left the victim laying in the roadway. Moments later, a vehicle traveling northbound struck the victim.  The driver of this vehicle did not stop.

Both the Fatal Accident Investigation Team and the Homicide Detail were notified and responded to investigate the crimes.

Homicide detectives were able to identify both of the female suspects.  On December 19, 2017 at about 1030 hours, BPD Detectives, with the assistance of the BPD Special Investigations Bureau detained both suspects at the corner of Adeline St and Fairview St. Detectives served search warrants at both suspects’ residences and recovered evidence related to the assault. The suspects were identified as Mamie Purnell 39, and Raine Wooten 32, both of Berkeley.

On December 21, 2017 the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged both Purnell and Wooten with attempted murder, and felony assault with enhancements for great bodily injury.  Purnell faces the additional charge of having committed a felony while out on bail.

The collision investigation is on-going.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the BPD Traffic Bureau at (510) 981-5980.
