Berkeley, California (Thursday, December 21, 2017) - On December 20, 2017 at approximately 6:17pm, Berkeley Police Department Dispatch received a call from a 17 year old victim who reported she had been sexually assaulted while walking in the area of Delaware and California Streets in North Berkeley.  She said she was walking alone when the suspect approached her and began making sexually explicit comments in an effort to “pick her up.”  The victim stated that the suspect eventually touched her inappropriately.  She further stated that he followed her to the Trader Joe’s at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and University Avenue before walking away.

She described the suspect as a black male adult, 20, 6-0, medium build, wearing a grey shirt and grey pants.  She further related that the suspect had introduced himself to her as “Jeremy Richard.”

About an hour later, Dispatch received a call from the 1400 block of Hopkins Street.  A female adult reported that she had been approached by a subject who made sexually explicit comments to her which made her uncomfortable in an effort to “pick her up.”  She said the suspect ultimately followed her up the driveway of her home before he walked away.  The description she provided of the subject was almost identical to the one provided an hour earlier by the victim.

A Berkeley Police Patrol Officer on an area check for the suspect made a pedestrian stop on a man who matched the suspect’s description near the intersection of California Street and Lincoln Street. The subject who was stopped identified himself to Police as Jeremy Richard.

Jeremy Richard 20, of Berkeley, was booked into the City of Berkeley Jail for Sexual Battery.

Anyone who has information regarding this crime is asked to contact the Berkeley Police Special Victims Unit at (510) 981-5715.
