Berkeley, California (Tuesday, October 31, 2017) - Halloween can be a fun and exciting night of the year particularly for kids.  The Berkeley Police Department encourages safety and supervision during this year’s holiday.  It is an important time to be extra vigilant to potential safety hazards.

Trick-or-Treat Tips

  • Do not trick-or-treat by yourself.
  • Take a flashlight.
  • Be sure costumes, shoes, and treat bags are safe.
  • Remind children to not enter stranger’s homes or vehicles.
  • Set rules about not eating the candy until it can be inspected by an adult.
  • Remember drivers have a hard time seeing people, especially at dusk.
  • Never cross the street from between parked vehicles.
  • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.

  • Turn on your porch light.
  • If you are placing a Jack-O-Lantern on your porch, consider using a battery operated light instead of a candle.
  • Maintain clear walkways that are free from obstructions.

  • Drive slowly and cautiously especially in residential neighborhoods.
  • Look for children walking on the street, running, and darting in between parked vehicles.
  • Be extra cautious when entering and exiting driveways.
  • Avoid distracted driving; please don’t use cell phones or text while driving.

Please report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police department by calling 9-1-1.

The Berkeley Police Department wishes everyone a happy, fun and safe Halloween.
