COPS ON PROTEST DUTY MAKE GUN AND DRUGS ARRESTS

Berkeley, California (Thursday, September 28, 2017) -  Protest Cops Make Drugs and Gun Arrests

On September 27, 2017, a team of officers were on patrol in the south campus area to support potential protests which were scheduled to occur at the University of California, Berkeley.  At approximately 1:50pm, the officers stopped a black Ford for vehicle code violations near the intersection of Durant and Piedmont Avenues.  As one of the officers contacted the driver and passengers (the driver was identified as David Maginniss 21, of El Sobrante, and passengers Sidney Barnum 19, of El Sobrante and Silas Times 21, of San Pablo) he was struck by the strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from inside the truck.

During the subsequent search of the vehicle and its three occupants, a loaded firearm, a quantity of Alprazolam pills, packaging materials, over $100 in cash, suspected Promethazine Codeine Syrup, and suspected marijuana were discovered.

Additional evidence was obtained after the officers secured a search warrant.  All three were booked into the City of Berkeley Jail.  Barnum was booked for Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm in Public, and Possession for Sale and Transportation of Designated Controlled Substances.  Maginniss and Times were booked for Possession for Sale and Transportation of Controlled Substances.

The Berkeley Police Department takes great pride in taking dangerous narcotics and weapons off its streets.
