Berkeley, California (Monday, July 03, 2017) - On June 28, 2017, at 6:49am, Berkeley Police Officers responded to the 2400 block of Hillside Avenue for a reported vandalism case which had been committed the night prior. The reporting party stated he came out to his car around at 6:30am and found it “tagged” (vandalized via spray paint). As he surveyed the damage to his car, he soon noticed that his partner's car had been similarly vandalized. He saw additional graffiti on other cars, his front gate and several other gates in the neighborhood.

There were 13 total victims of vandalism discovered as a result of this initial call for service. The suspect(s) used spray paint to damage numerous vehicles and gates.

At 8:58am, additional vandalism cases were reported to the Berkeley Police Department. During the course of second call for service, 10 cars on the 2300 block of Prospect Street were found to have had their tires slashed. At 11:16am, 7 more victim vehicles were discovered with their tires slashed on the 2400 block of Prospect Street.

Given the close geographic proximity of all 30 cases, and the narrow time frame in which they were committed, Detectives believe that all the cases may be related.

The Berkeley Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance with this investigation. If you have any information or surveillance video from the evening/morning of June 27th/28th that can help us identify the person(s) responsible, please contact Detective Josh Smith in the Berkeley Police Property Crimes Detail at (510) 981-5737.
