SEXUAL BATTERY SUSPECT ARRESTED BY DETECTIVES

Berkeley, California (Thursday, June 08, 2017) - On May 29, 2017 at approximately 7:08pm, a 19 year old female victim was walking in the area of Bancroft Way and Fulton Street when a white male adult in his 30’s grabbed her buttocks as she walked by him.  The victim turned around and chased the suspect and took his picture with her phone.  As the victim was taking the photo, the suspect hit the victim in the face in an attempt to either take it or knock it away.  The victim ran from the suspect who was last seen running north bound on Fulton Street from Bancroft Way.  The victim provided the suspect’s picture and her initial statement to the University of California Police Department (UCPD).  UCPD provided the information to Berkeley Police Detectives on May 30, 2017.

The suspect’s picture was circulated among Berkeley Police Officers and Detectives.  One of the officers recognized the suspect from prior contacts and tentatively identified him to the handling detective as Clay Collier 33, of Berkeley.

On June 6, 2017 a search warrant and arrest warrant were obtained by Special Victim’s Unit (SVU) Detectives.  Two days later, SVU served the search warrant at Collier’s residence and located evidence indicating that he was the person responsible for the attack.  As the detectives were leaving Collier’s apartment he was arrested out front.  He was booked into the Berkeley City Jail for Sexual Battery and Battery.

Members of the community who have information related to this case or who may have been victims themselves, are encouraged to contact the Special Victim’s Unit at (510) 981-5715.
