BIKE TO WORK ON MAY 11
Join in bicycling events around town

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, May 09, 2017) - Bike to work on Thursday and you'll join many of those who make Berkeley the nation's top bike commuting City.

When you do, you can also join a variety 2017-05-09 bike to workof
Berkeley community bicycling events, from visiting Energizer Stations to learning more about the City's plans to make Berkeley streets better for bicycling.

The activities on Thursday May 11 include:

2017 is a big year for bicycling in Berkeley. The City of Berkeley is celebrating the City Council's approval on May 2 of the updated Berkeley Bicycle Plan, the planning for the launch of bike share in July, new parking-protected bikeways, which use a physical separation such as parked cars to give extra protection to bike lanes. You can see an example on Southbound Fulton Street between Bancroft and Channing. The impending bike projects on Bancroft Avenue and Hearst Avenue, will be completed in the Summer and Fall of 2017, respectively.

Berkeleyans love bicycling. According to the 2014 US Census American Community Survey, Berkeley has the highest percentage of bike commuters ( 9.7%) for cities with a population over 100,000 in the United States. Berkeley's 9.7% of people who bike to work is a rate that's more than four times the Alameda County average and nearly five times the Bay Area average.
