Keep the birds and the humans around them happy

Berkeley, California (Thursday, March 30, 2017) - Come to an April 23 workshop and learn how to raise your backyard chickens in a way that's humane, conforms to laws and respects neighbors.

This workshop touches topics ranging from zoning to caretaking. It's geared to anyone interested in raising chickens - or currently doing so. The program will address issues such as chicken behavior and how it relates to husbandry, adopting from rescue shelters and where to find equipment.

As urban farming and chicken husbandry2017-03-30 chicken raising workshop april 23
increase in popularity, the workshop is an effort to provide vital information that keeps both the birds and the humans happy. The goal is to educate before problems arise. Due to high demand, please RSVP to reserve a spot.

The workshop will be led by Carine Elkhoraibi, an Animal Welfare Scientist at UC Davis and expert on chicken behavior.

Other topics include:

  • Coop and perch design, including how to protect your birds
  • How to minimize problem behaviors
  • How to introduce new birds
  • Where to find equipment
  • What to consider when purchasing from a hatchery
  • Getting chickens from animal shelters and rescues.
  • Local laws regarding backyard chickens
  • How to avoid predators

While Berkeley Animal Care Services (BACS) has long been a popular place for East Bay residents to find new dogs and cats, the shelter also remains an excellent resource when it comes to learning how to care for pets of all kinds.
