BPD: OVERNIGHT ROBBERIES SIGNAL SPREE TO INVESTIGATORS

Berkeley, California (Thursday, November 10, 2016) -   The Berkeley Police Department is investigating two completed and one attempted robbery that occurred on 11/9/16.  Based on the descriptions of the suspects, their close geographic and temporal proximity, investigators believe that the incidents are related.

The first incident was an attempted robbery which occurred around 9:12 pm, on the 2700 block of Milvia Street.  The suspect attempted to grab the victim's wallet which he was able to retain before he ran into a neighboring business for help.

The second incident occurred at 9:22pm, on the 1600 block of Berkeley Way.  The male suspect grabbed the victim's cellphone by force while two female suspects punched the victim in the head.

The third incident occurred at 9:28pm, on the 1700 block of Spruce Street and again the lone victim was approached by a group of three suspects.   The victim resisted and fought back but ultimately gave the suspects his backpack and its contents.

In two of the three cases the suspects were described as:

  • Suspect #1: BM, late teens/early 20s
  • Suspect #2: BF, late teens/early 20s
  • Suspect #3: BF, late teens/early 20s

Additional Officers have been assigned to respond to and deter further incidents of pedestrian robberies.  The Department also encourages the following crime prevention measures for our Community members who are out walking after dark:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Travel in large groups whenever possible
  • Consider putting your smart phone in a pocket while in transit
  • Attempt to travel in well lighted, highly populated areas whenever possible
