Increasing transparency in Berkeley Elections

Berkeley, California (Friday, September 02, 2016) - As the election season moves forward, residents and others can use the City's electronic campaign filing portal to get details and insights on the financing of local campaigns.

The site allows users to look at fundraising and spending data for all measures and candidates. This year, that includes races for City Council, Mayor, Rent Board and the Berkeley Unified School District Board.

Residents can download, view, sort, and analyze the contribution and expenditure data in those filings using Excel or other database programs. Prior to 2014, records were filed on paper - then scanned and made available on the City Clerk website. The portal also allows users to look up campaign finance information stretching back to 2002.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Public Access Portal at www.netfile.com/agency/brk/ and explore the options for searching and downloading Berkeley campaign finance data.

To learn more about Berkeley's campaign finance system and how it interacts with state laws, see our page on the Berkeley Election Reform Act, which was adopted by voters in 1974.

See the Clerk Department's Election page for information about candidates and measures for the November 8, 2016 General Election.

The electronic filing system means that all campaign statements are instantly posted online once they are filed.  Previously, city staff had to scan, then manually post the filings to the website, which caused a delay in their availability to the public.

The electronic filing system is made possible through the City's partnership with NetFile, a California based company that specializes in electronic filing of campaign statements and Form 700 filings.
