BPD: MABEL STREET SHOOTING MARKS CITY'S FIRST HOMICIDE OF THE YEAR

Berkeley, California (Friday, August 19, 2016) - At 11:58pm on 8/18/2016, Berkeley Police Dispatch received multiple calls of multiple shots fired in the area of Mabel and Burnett Streets.  Officers responded to this Southwest Berkeley neighborhood where they found the shooting victim, an adult black male resident, unresponsive.  The Victim was transported by the Berkeley Fire Department to the Alameda County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.  The suspects are still at large.  Homicide Detectives are on scene and working the investigation.

We don't believe that there is an immediate threat to the community as the shooting does not appear to have been random.  We are asking for the community's assistance with the furtherance of the investigation. They are encouraged to call the Berkeley Police Department at 510 981-5741 and can do so anonymously if they wish.

This is the City's first confirmed homicide of the year.
