BUILD COMMUNITY, ORGANIZE FOR NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Berkeley, California (Thursday, June 16, 2016) - Start planning for National Night Out, an effort to build healthier and safer communities through a simple act: getting to know your neighbors.

Use the night of August 2nd to organize your block, join a gathering in your Berkeley neighborhood, or meet nearby residents. Some neighbors simply turn on their lights and have conversations on their porches. Many areas throw block parties.

Last year, over 100 groups in Berkeley celebrated National Night Out with events that ranged from potlucks, hors d'oeuvres and barbecue cookouts to ice cream socials. Bring your block into the fold in 2016.  If your neighborhood, business, church, association or community agency would like to participate, please fill out the registration form and send it to Berkeley Police Officer Brandon Smith at BCSmith@cityofberkeley.info by July 26.

National Night Out attendees can connect with their neighbors and dozens of City employees, from Police to Public Works, who make an effort to come out to every gathering registered with Officer Smith.

Strong neighborhoods also lay a foundation for resiliency, strengthening response after a disaster. Learn how you can help prepare your neighborhood for disaster through the City's Office of Emergency Services. As an incentive to organize your block, the Office of Emergency Services, in conjunction with Public Works, offers free dumpsters once a year to Berkeley neighbors who regularly collaborate through certain City programs, including National Night Out.

Whatever you plan for your block, keep it fun and inviting for all of those in your neighborhood.  National Night Out is an excellent way to interact with and get to know your neighbors better. Get the word out about the celebration early to get people to participate in your event.

If you have any questions regarding the event or registration, please contact Officer Smith at (510) 981-5773.  We hope to see you at National Night Out.
