POLICE RESPOND TO REPORT OF SUSPICIOUS DEVICE
French Training Grenade Safely Recovered

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, June 01, 2016) - On 5/31/16 at 4:00pm, Berkeley Police Dispatch received a report of a possible explosive device which had been discovered in the planter box of a residence on the 1200 block of Spruce St.  The department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Team responded and recovered a World War II era, French military, training hand grenade.  The device was unearthed when some work was being done on the property.  The device was safely disposed of by the EOD Team.

Events like this one are not uncommon.  When community members discover something that might be hazardous, they are encouraged to leave the object in place and contact the Berkeley Police Department.  Despite this device’s age, it was still capable of causing injury if not properly handled.
