Berkeley, California (Tuesday, October 09, 2012) - Fire Prevention week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and promote fire awareness. This year's theme "Have Two Ways Out" is a reminder to the Berkeley community to have an escape plan and determine two ways out of the building in case of fire.

Most fires or injuries can be prevented by following a few simple suggestions.

  • Have two ways out of your home and practice your escape plan with your family or roommates.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Batteries should be changed and tested every six months. 62% of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or working smoke alarms.
  • Unattended cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires and home injuries since 1990.  Check and turn off your stove and oven before leaving your home.
  • Make sure candles are mounted in a secure nonflammable base that will not tip easily. Never leave a candle unattended or where young children can reach them. In 2010, candles caused 3% of home fires and 4% of home fire deaths nationwide.
  • Improperly discarded smoking materials are the leading cause of home fire deaths. Use ash trays and properly extinguish smoking materials to prevent ignition of combustible materials.
