Berkeley, California (Monday, May 21, 2012) -  “On Friday morning, May 18, 2012 at about 1:13 a.m., City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) patrol officers responded to a collision on California Street and Allston Way in Central Berkeley. BPD officers found a solo car collision on California Street just north of Allston Way. A Cadillac had struck a tree there. City of Berkeley Fire Department personnel responded as well. One of the occupants, a woman passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants, a male driver and a young boy were transported to local hospital trauma units with serious injuries.”

“As of Monday, May 21, 2012 at 6:45 p.m., both the male driver and the child remain in the hospital. At the request of the family, BPD is honoring their wishes that we do not share the condition of the child. “

“BPD FAIT (Fatal Accident Investigation Team) is continuing their investigation. With an investigation that is so important and sensitive on many levels, we trust that you understand that BPD wants to be as accurate as possible in terms of all the dynamics that led to the vehicle colliding with the tree. This may take some time.”

“Very preliminarily, the evidence at the scene suggests that the Cadillac was travelling northbound on California Street when it struck the round a bout in the intersection of Allston Way, then collided with the tree on the eastside of California Street just north of Allston Way.”

“Impairment of a driver involved in a fatal collision of any sort is always explored as part of the investigation.”

“BPD is requesting the community’s support with this investigation. If there are any community members or others that may have been witness to any part of this collision, please call the BPD Traffic & Parking Bureau (510)981-5980 and leave a message with your name and contact information.”
