Berkeley, California (Tuesday, February 07, 2012) - The artist “RTYSTK” a.k.a. Derrick Shavers, has been painting full-time for the past seven years, walking away from a seemingly secure longtime job in manufacturing assembly to take up the real passion of his life.  RTYSTK works prolifically and spontaneously with acrylic, aerosol and mixed media on canvas, wood, textiles, and t-shirts.

RTYSTK : The Continuum of Art, Culture & Wellness

Addison Street Windows Gallery

2018 Addison Street (between Shattuck Av./ Milvia St.) Berkeley

February 1 to March 16, 2012

The canvases, many self-stretched, are splashed with energetic, vibrant colors, upbeat with Afro-American cultural references of struggle and resilience. He calls it a mission of “wellness”, conveying the message of positing creative, psychological and physical health for the community. By borrowing and incorporating elements and artifacts from different cultures, he hopes to bridge the commonality of all peoples.

There is a hint of the neo-expressionist style that so many artists today attempt to recreate. Most “reformed” graffiti writers attempting to shift from public walls to canvas find themselves stilted by the transition, but RTYSTK’s spontaneous energy and motion feels unhindered and free, the paintbrush guided by his subconscious cultural impulses.

The exhibit runs from February 1 through March 16, 2012.

Exhibits in the Addison Street Windows Gallery, located on Addison Street between Milvia Street and Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley’s downtown Arts District, can be viewed 24 hours a day from the sidewalk, are free and wheelchair accessible.
