Stores Open for Busiest Shopping Weekend of the Year

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, November 22, 2011) - Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue shopping district is open for business and ready to serve holiday shoppers. Despite a major fire last week, pedestrians can access retail stores on Telegraph. Nearly 200 music, book, clothing and gift stores are open for holiday buying during the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

“Telegraph Avenue merchants provide quality, unique shopping opportunities for the holidays, and this year is no exception,” said City of Berkeley Economic Development Manager Michael Caplan. “The holidays are about community, and retailers across Berkeley know this better than anyone. Shopping locally is an easy way to make a difference. Studies show that dollars spent at local, independent businesses re-circulate in the region up to three times more. These days, that can have a big impact.”

Roland Peterson of the Telegraph Avenue Business Improvement District (www.telegraphberkeley.org/) said, “From nationally recognized clothing stores, to unique independent shops, Telegraph Avenue is a wonderful place to find gifts – and have an amazing experience at the same time!”

The Telegraph Holiday Street Fair is also still scheduled for December 16, 17, 18, 22, and 24 from 11 am to 6 p.m. More than 200 artisans come every year to sell their handcrafted items on the Avenue. Visit www.telegraphfair.com for more information.

Fortunately, no one was reported injured in the fire, which occurred on Friday, November 18. However, the block of Telegraph Avenue between Channing and Haste is closed to vehicle traffic while the building is secured. In the meantime, shoppers are urged to use the Telegraph/Channing Garage, which has easy access from Channing Way and Durant Avenue.

More information about the fire and traffic is available on www.cityofberkeley.info.
