Berkeley, California (Tuesday, October 18, 2011) - This Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m., Berkeley residents are encouraged to join nearly ten million Californians in businesses, government offices, organizations, neighborhoods and schools in the largest earthquake drill ever.

The drill, known as The Great California ShakeOut, has become an important annual statewide event. The best way to instinctively and immediately do the right thing when the shaking begins is to practice, and residents can participate from at home, work or school.

The ShakeOut is organized by multiple agencies, including the California Emergency Management Agency, United States Geological Survey and the American Red Cross. The ShakeOut has been created to help people and organizations get better prepared for major earthquakes, and practice protecting themselves when they happen. Individuals or groups can register their participation at www.ShakeOut.org and to be officially counted and to receive a customized Certificate of Participation to download after the drill.

The ShakeOut is taking place the same week as the twentieth anniversary of the Hills Firestorm and the twenty-second anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. These anniversaries are reminders of the importance of being personally prepared for any kind of disaster.

Community members are encouraged to take basic steps outlined in the Five Critical Steps Earthquake Preparedness brochure available on the City of Berkeley’s website: (www.cityofberkeley.info/getready).
