Berkeley, California (Tuesday, June 07, 2011) - ** NOTE: The deadline for submissions has been extended to July 22. Please visit this Civic Arts web page  for more information.**

Young artists who are 18 years old and under from all over Berkeley are being invited to put their art on some of Berkeley’s dull grey utility boxes as part of the 60 Boxes project. The 60 Boxes project will place artistic treatments on 60 utility boxes in the downtown area. The theme of the project is sustainability, and all designs must incorporate the promotion of sustainability. In addition to having their art become part of Berkeley’s street scene, winners will be given a $200 stipend.

The project is a joint effort of the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission and the Earth Island Institute, with support from the Open Circle Foundation and the East Bay Community Foundation.

Sustainable concepts include, but are not limited to, “ecological, social, cultural, financial and physical.” This project aims to transform grey utility boxes into artistic elements that complement the community, ideas and public experience in Downtown Berkeley.

For more information about the project, or to fill out the Call for Artist application, please visit: http://www.cityofberkeley.info/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=9744 and scroll down to the "60 Boxes Project." There are separate applications for young people and for adults, who are also invited to respond to the Call for Artists.
