Berkeley, California (Tuesday, August 17, 2010) - In recognition of the Berkeley Climate Action Plan, the California chapter of the American Planning Association has awarded the City of Berkeley their 2010 Innovation in Green Community Planning Award. The award honors the City's excellence and leadership in planning, and its commitment to turn the climate plan into action.

The Climate Action Plan established a roadmap to reducing the community's greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent from 2000 levels by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. Approved by the City Council in 2009, the Plan identified the main sources of local emissions and recommended specific actions and timelines for slashing energy and waste city-wide.  It is the foundation for several recently launched City programs, including the Money for Energy Efficiency  rebate program and the new Rainwater Harvesting Guidelines. The City of Berkeley charts the progress toward the Plan's goals at: www.cityofberkeley.info/climate.

"It's an honor to receive this recognition from the American Planning Association's California Chapter," said Timothy Burroughs, City of Berkeley Climate Action Coordinator. "It helps to raise awareness of local climate action efforts and of the urgency of the climate movement."

"From the beginning the Climate Action Plan has been community driven and supported. Its development was mandated by the people of Berkeley with an overwhelming 80 percent of the voting population and unanimously adopted by the City Council," said Planning and Development Director Dan Marks. "Berkeley continues to be at the forefront of the sustainability movement and it is great to be recognized for our leadership and innovation."

The California Chapter of the American Planning Association is a network of urban planning professionals that seeks to encourage public participation in planning, promoting excellence in planning and increasing the public's understanding of, and appreciation for, planning and its contributions toward improving the quality of life.

The City of Berkeley will be honored in an awards ceremony to be held on Tuesday November 2 and invited to submit the CAP for consideration for the National APA award. This state award follows on the heels of an Outstanding Green Community Planning Award given to the City by the Northern California Chapter of the APA last May.

The Climate Action Plan and our progress to date towards meeting the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets can be viewed online at www.cityofberkeley.info/climate.
