Berkeley, California (Wednesday, July 14, 2010) - The Berkeley City Council confirmed the appointment of Beth Meyerson as the Department of Health Services Director at its meeting Tuesday night. Meyerson is currently the Director of Health and Human Services for Colusa County, and is responsible for the management of their Public Health, Environmental Health and Social Services.

“I was impressed by the variety of professional experience Beth brings to the table,” said City Manager Phil Kamlarz. “She has faced challenges in community health and in local government budgeting, and I believe she is the right person to lead the department, especially right now.”

The Department of Health Services has been without a permanent director since the retirement of Fred Medrano at the end of 2009. An interim director, Daren Fields, was in place between January and June, and since that time, the department’s Deputy
Director, Peggy Gibbons, has been serving as the interim director.

The appointment is effective August 8, 2010.

Meyerson is currently the Director of Health and Human Services for Colusa County, responsible for the management of Public Health, Environmental Health and Social Services. Prior to that, she was the Director of Mental Health for Mendocino County, and she also served as the Deputy County Administrative Officer. She has worked in the Lake County Health Department  and the Sonoma and Sutter County Administrators’ offices.

She is a part-time instructor for the U.C. Davis Extension, and has worked as a consultant for the California Mental Health Directors Association and the Association of Regional Center Agencies.

Myerson received her B.S. from California State University Fresno and her Master’s in Public Administration from the Consortium of the California State University and Colleges.

About the Department

The Berkeley Health Services Department is made up of nurses, community outreach workers, health care providers, health educators, inspectors, office support staff, health policy specialists and public health program professionals. The department has a budget $24.64 million for the current fiscal year, and a total of 165 FTEs (full-time equivalents).

The department has four divisions: Office of the Director and Administration; Environmental Health Services; Mental Health Services; and Public Health Services.

The Health Services Department also staffs four commissions: the Community Health Commission, the Mental Health Commission, the Peace & Justice Commission, and the Commission on the Status of Women.
