Berkeley, California (Wednesday, July 14, 2010) - The City of Berkeley was named as the top large Bay Area city for solar installation per capita by the Northern California Solar Energy Association (NorCal Solar). For this achievement, NorCal Solar is presenting Berkeley with a City/County Solar Award on July 14 at an awards ceremony at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

As of December 31, 2009, Berkeley was home to the most per capita new solar energy systems installed on residential, commercial, and municipal buildings for all Bay Area large cities. The Solar City/County Awards compares the total grid-tied PV installations on all buildings in over 100 Bay Area communities.

“Berkeley residents are at the forefront of the solar movement and should be congratulated for their forward thinking and commitment to sustainability,” said Neal De Snoo, City of Berkeley Energy Officer.

The City of Berkeley offers free individualized technical assistance to Berkeley property owners interested in installing renewable energy to power their homes and businesses through the SmartSolar Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and PG&E. In addition, the City of Berkeley hosts an online mapping tool that can assess the solar potential for any roof in the City.
