Berkeley, California (Tuesday, March 23, 2010) - Last week, 2010 Census forms were delivered to Berkeley mailboxes. The U.S. Census Bureau, City of Berkeley, trusted leaders of community, faith-based organizations, and UC Berkeley encourages all residents to take 10 minutes to complete 10 questions on the census form and mail it back. All census responses are confidential; they are protected by law and not shared with anyone.

Census data is vital to communities. The data from the decennial Census of the United States of America determines how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and used for the redistricting of state legislatures, county and city councils, and voting districts. Census population totals are also used to determine the distribution of more than $400 billion per year in federal and state funds for programs such as health and social services, transportation, housing, education, employment, public safety, and community development.

The Census Bureau has set up Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QACs) to provide in-person information and language assistance to residents in completing their forms. “Be Counted” sites were also established where community members who did not receive or have lost their questionnaire can get a new census questionnaire to fill out and mail back. Census forms, at the “Be Counted” sites, are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese.  A complete list of the QACs and Be Counted sites, and contact information for the Telephone Questionnaire Assistance Center can be viewed at http://2010.census.gov.
