Berkeley, California (Tuesday, February 16, 2010) - On February 10, 2010, Berkeley Police Officer Douglas Golden was honored as the Northern California Officer of the Year at an awards dinner in Reno, Nevada. The California Robbery Investigator’s Association awarded him for his heroic actions in helping the San Leandro Police Department (SLPD) apprehend three armed and dangerous robbery suspects.

The incident originally occurred on May 27, 2009, at 9:22 p.m., when Officer Golden was driving home in his personal car after his patrol shift ended in Berkeley. As Golden passed the Quik Stop Mart at 1001 MacArthur Boulevard, he saw two men lurking suspiciously in the shadows outside the business. He fully realized that he was witnessing a robbery in progress when he observed one of the two men draw a pistol from his waistband and enter the business. Golden immediately contacted the SLPD dispatch to help coordinate their response, as the suspect’s were robbing the store.

The suspects emerged from the business and left the crime scene in a car driven by a third suspect. Golden began following the suspect vehicle at a safe distance while providing the dispatcher with a description of the suspects and their vehicle. During his phone conversation with dispatch, the gap between his car and the suspect vehicle began to narrow and the suspects soon realized that they were being followed. When the suspect vehicle turned Northbound on Harrison Street, it stopped in the middle of the street with its lights off. As Golden negotiated the turn onto Harrison Street, he saw two suspects spring from their vehicle and began firing their weapons at him. Golden backed out of the ambush as his car was struck several times by the suspect’s rounds. Golden then moved out of the area and flagged down a nearby SLPD officer who was responding to the robbery.

Golden and Chief MeehanWith Officer Golden’s assistance, the SLPD took the driver into custody that night and an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Deputy arrested the second suspect two days later without incident. The third suspect has been arrested in Florida on unrelated charges.

The California Robbery Investigator’s Association gives out its top honors to one officer each year from Northern and Southern California. This is the third time in ten years that a Berkeley Police officer has received this prestigious award.

Berkeley’s Chief of Police, Michael K. Meehan, was on hand during the presentation and said of the event, “Not only was I proud of Officer Doug Golden’s heroic actions but I was touched at how far the Robbery Investigator’s Association went to make him and his wife feel like part of their family.”

Please join us as we congratulate Officer Golden on his heroic achievement.
