Updated Schedule of Railroad Crossing Closures

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 03, 2010) - Union Pacific (U.P.) Railroad work was delayed by recent weather conditions but is rescheduled to start at Gilman Street on February 15, 2010, and expected to be completed by  late February, barring unforeseen problems or weather conditions. The project includes replacement/repair of existing railroad ties, repair/installation of new overlay at crossings, pavement work, and installation of flangeway fillers on the two mainline tracks. This project is funded and will be carried out by U.P. The City of Berkeley will provide traffic control during the reconstruction work.

There are seven U.P. railroad crossings in Berkeley. The work will occur at two non-adjacent crossings at a time except for Gilman Street which will be done alone.  Due to the nature of the repairs complete street closures at the crossings are necessary on a 24-hour basis. Each crossing will be closed for two consecutive days. No traffic will be allowed across 3rd Street at the railroad crossing during the closure. Crossing closures will be on a 24/7 basis according to the following schedule. Click here to view the public notice and map of the work area.

  • February 15 & 16 – Gilman crossing closed
  • February 17 & 18 – Camelia and Hearst crossings closed
  • February 22 & 23 – Cedar and Addison crossings closed
  • February 24 & 25 – Virginia and Bancroft crossings closed

Traffic may also be delayed at the work site and surrounding area. Detour signs will be placed to guide traffic to alternative routes. Parking along the railroad right of way will be restricted and enforced by Union Pacific Police during construction.  Violators may be towed by Union Pacific Police.  Neighborhood parking will not be affected, all other parking restrictions, including no parking for street cleaning, will be in effect. Some equipment noise is to be expected during the reconstruction work.
