Residents and employees urged to carpool and vanpool

Berkeley, California (Friday, August 14, 2009) - In light of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) strike that is expected to begin on Monday, August 17, 2009, the City is urging Berkeley residents and employees to use carpools, vanpools, buses and bikes to go to work.

“Like all employers, we know that employees will be affected either directly, because they commute to work on BART, or indirectly, because other routes and transit options will be more crowded,” said Acting City Manager Lisa Caronna. “We are asking all of our employees to plan ahead and anticipate how the strike might affect them.”

The following transit options are available in Berkeley:
1. Carpool or Vanpool
2. Bus (www.ACTransit.org)
3. Drive (Visit the Off-Street Parking webpage in Transportation for more information on where to park in Berkeley—note that the garages offer all-day parking, but the Elmwood and Berkeley Way lots have limited durations)
4. Bike (Visit http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=6560 for more information)
For more information and recommendations on options for drivers and transit users, check 511.org (http://www.511.org/bartdisruption/main.asp) or BART.gov (http://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2009/news20090623.aspx). For example, BART parking lots are free during the job action and are a good carpool meeting place.

There is also a list of transit providers and the special services being offered by each (http://www.511.org/bartdisruption/transit.asp).

AC Transit is running extra buses on certain routes, and has a list of bus routes to downtown Berkeley from BART stations: (http://www.actransit.org/riderinfo/4bartstrike/2009/berkeley-chart.pdf).

Residents and employees are encouraged to monitor local media for updated transit news. For a list of media outlets covering Berkeley, visit http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=7160.
