Berkeley, California (Monday, June 29, 2009) - On Saturday, June 27, 2009, at approximately 5:17 p.m. the Berkeley Police Dispatch began receiving calls about a house fire on the 1700 block of Woolsey Street.  A few minutes later an officer at the scene reported the house was fully engulfed in flames.  The Fire Department responded and began putting the fire out.

While at the scene of the first fire, information came to light that there had been a second smaller fire set outside of a home on the 1800 block of Woolsey Street, which had been extinguished by the resident.  Some time after that, officers interviewing community members in the area learned of a third suspicious fire (also on the 1800 block of Woolsey) where someone attempted to set fire to a parked car.

The Berkeley Fire Department's Fire Marshall responded to the scene and described all three fires as suspicious in their origins and most likely arson.

Members of the community are encouraged to contact the Berkeley Police Property Crimes Detail at 981-5737 or 981-5900 via the Berkeley Police Dispatch if they have information regarding these crimes.

If callers wish to remain anonymous, please call Bay Area Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.   All Bay Area Crime Stoppers calls are completely confidential, and up to a $2,000 reward is offered.
