Berkeley, California (Monday, June 08, 2009) - Two children were injured this morning when the home they were sleeping in was struck by gunfire. The children, girls ages 3 and 6 years old, are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital.

The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) received calls from community members at approximately 4:56 a.m. reporting possible gunshots in the 1500 block of Oregon Street in South Berkeley. When BPD patrol officers arrived in the area, they quickly discovered a home on the block that had been struck numerous times by bullets.

Shortly after the shooting, a staff member from a nearby hospital’s Emergency Room called BPD to report that they had just received two young patients that had been shot.

Since this investigation is in its early stages and BPD does not want to compromise it’s efforts, little more can be currently shared with the public. BPD does not believe that this shooting is random.

BPD is asking for the community’s help with this investigation. Anyone who may have any information regarding this crime is urged to call the BPD Homicide Detail at (510) 981- 5741 (office) or (510) 981-5900 (non-emergency dispatch line). If callers wish to remain anonymous they are asked to call the Bay Area Crime Stoppers Tip Line (BACS) at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477). BACS calls are completely confidential.
