Press Contact: Robert Rittenhouse, Sergeant of Traffic Bureau, (510) 981-5982

Berkeley, California (Thursday, May 14, 2009) - As part of a grant received from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) has scheduled another Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Driver’s License (DL) checkpoint. This marks the third of such programs this year. The checkpoint will take place on Friday, May 15th from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.  A team of BPD officers will be evaluating drivers on Alcatraz Avenue west of Dover Street.

DUI/DL checkpoints are a valuable tool in the fight to reduce impaired driving.  In the year 2007, there were *20,877 alcohol involved injury collisions in the State of California alone. This statistic does not include the *1,347 fatalities caused by impaired drivers.

Sergeant Robert Rittenhouse the BPD Traffic Bureau Supervisor said, “We hope to both educate motorists about the dangers of driving impaired as well as remove drunk drivers from the roadway.” Rittenhouse went on to say, “Many people don’t realize that impaired driving is not just limited to alcohol. Drivers are often found driving impaired from use of certain prescription drugs, marijuana and narcotics.”

Funding for this enforcement program comes as the result of a $174,846 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

*Statistics taken from Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS)
