Berkeley, California (Thursday, April 09, 2009) - Berkeley’s Climate Action Plan, which the City Council will take up on April 21, 2009, is a research- and community-based response to the challenge of climate change. Built on hundreds of hours of community input, the latest draft of the Climate Action Plan presents an approach to creating a more livable, equitable and economically vibrant community. An updated draft of the plan is now available online at www.cityofberkeley.info/sustainable

Hundreds of Berkeley residents had input into this plan by attending commission-hosted workshops, “town hall” meetings, and neighborhood association meetings. They also reviewed and commented on earlier drafts on the City’s climate action website: www.BerkeleyClimateAction.org, and weighed in on issues such as planning, transportation, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and recycling.

The Climate Action Plan focuses on actions that can and should be implemented between now and 2020. This version of the plan also includes more specific program details, including a more detailed and specific emphasis on local food production and specific actions to prepare local residents for emerging green job opportunities.

The City will continue to engage local residents, businesses, and community organizations in turning the plan into action.

Berkeley Climate Action Plan background: In November 2006, 81% of Berkeley voters endorsed ballot Measure G, which established an aggressive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction target for our community – 80% by 2050 – and directed the City to develop a plan for achieving that target.
