Berkeley, California (Tuesday, December 30, 2008) - On January 2, 2009 the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) and the Oakland Police Department (OPD) will partner-up and hit the streets as part of Operation “LAST CALL”; a directed enforcement effort aimed at protecting motorists from impaired drivers.

Approximately 10 officers from each agency will staff a DUI checkpoint from 8PM until 1AM at the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Woolsey Street in Berkeley.

“This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to work more closely with OPD along our shared border,” said Lieutenant Erik Upson, Commander of the BPD’s Traffic Division.   “We hope it’s just the beginning of a more effective partnership.”

Funding for the special enforcement comes from a $23,000 grant from California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Members of the media are encouraged to visit us at the checkpoint.
