Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 02, 2008) - Two new 12-foot scupltures are being placed on each side of the I-80 pedestrian and bike bridge in Berkeley, and the public is invited to help celebrate what will become one of the most viewed public art installations in California.

On October 18, the public is invited to the celebration and to see the first of the two sculptures. The figure on the east side personifies the urban and cultural experience of Berkeley, including the University of California’s campanile, a violinist, a scientist, an activist, and a wheelchair-user. The figure on the Marina side, which will be installed at a later date, represents recreation and nature.

WHAT: Public Art Celebration of Berkeley Big People
WHEN: Saturday, October 18 at 11:30 a.m.
WHERE: East side turnouts of the bike/pedestrian bridge.
WHO: Mayor Tom Bates; Councilmember Darryl Moore; Scott Donahue, artist; Civic Arts Commission Chair David Snippen and Manager of the Office of Economic Development, Michael Caplan.

There will be light refreshments and entertainment and the artist will be available to talk about the installation and the techniques he developed for construction. Everyone will be invited to walk up the path and to view the sculptures up close.

To see pictures of this art go to the City of Berkeley web site: www.cityofberkeley.info and click on Arts and Culture on the left hand side.

This is a public art project of the City of Berkeley 1.5% for art program of the Civic Arts Commission. The Civic Arts Program is in the Office of Economic Development. This project was done in partnership with the Public Works Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, and various agencies including CALTRANS.
