SAVE THE DATE: Saturday October 4th, 2008 at the Downtown Berkeley Farmers’ Market

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, September 10, 2008) - Is your yard suffering from reduced watering? Come to the Downtown Berkeley Farmers’ Market for a free workshop on creating attractive and healthy landscapes while reducing waste and water use.

What: Green Gardening: Exhibits and Workshops on Saving Water and Reducing Waste
When: Saturday, October 4th from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm
Where: Downtown Berkeley Farmers’ Market
Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Park (Center St. at MLK)
Cost: Free!

Just in time for the Fall planting season, you can learn about plant selection, efficient irrigation, greywater and rain harvesting systems, mulching, composting, environmentally friendly pest controls and more. Get expert advice from landscape, irrigation, greywater and plant specialists and find out ways to save water in the home. Free faucet aerators, showerheads and soil amendment will be distributed, as well as valuable raffle prizes such as irrigation controllers, drought tolerant plants and other helpful gardening resources.
Two dry winters in a row have resulted in the biggest water supply threat in nearly 20 years. East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has declared a severe water shortage emergency and mandatory rationing is now in effect. Almost half of all water used at home is for outdoor irrigation. Green Gardening will feature exhibits and workshops to help improve your landscaping while minimizing water use both indoors and out. Attendees are invited to bring irrigation and planting plans to review with landscape professionals. Co-sponsors of Green Gardening include the Ecology Center, Stopwaste's Bay Friendly Program and East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD).
