Berkeley Marina Volunteer Program great opportunity for adults committed to kids, nature and education

Berkeley, California (Thursday, September 04, 2008) - Do you enjoy exploring outdoors with children, helping them to discover and appreciate their natural environment? If you get excited investigating the beach, riding in a boat, peering under docks and rocks for animal life, or bird-watching from the pier, the Berkeley Marina Volunteer Program could be for you. We encourage people who are committed to children and are interested in environmental education to join our Docent Program.

Established 22 years ago, this unique program is designed to train volunteers to assist naturalists in teaching the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area to children aged 5-18.  Our environmental education programs include low tide walks, the research boat and sailing programs, birds, fish, marine mammals, bay scientist labs and summer marine biology and boating programs. Each session includes a hands-on experience and then application techniques, with our indoor labs and in each of the local estuarine environments: rocky shore, inter-tidal zone, dock, pier and open water.

Trainings sessions are as follows:

WHERE: Shorebird Park Nature Center, 160 University Avenue, at the Berkeley Marina

WHEN: Thursday and Friday mornings, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
              Oct 16, 2008 - March

Volunteers are asked to commit to 14 hours a month. There will be five initial training sessions, and beginning in November, subject-matter trainings will be interspersed with the kids' classroom sessions. If you can only attend Friday morning trainings, there may still be an opportunity for you to volunteer. Please call for more information.

Training is ongoing and we encourage new people to join us throughout the year. For more information and details on dates and times, check out our web site at: www.cityofberkeley.info/marina and follow links for the volunteer bay interpretive training programs or call (510) 981-6720.
