Put it on your calendar: The Annual Shoreline Cleanup is September 20

Berkeley, California (Monday, August 18, 2008) - On Saturday, September 20, Berkeley residents are invited to join the tens of thousands of California volunteers who will help clean up our local beaches, bays, and waterways during this year's Coastal Clean Up.

The Coastal Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, and is sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, the City of Berkeley, and other local organizations. Local events are also part of an international movement that includes volunteers from at least 97 countries.

In California last year, more than 60,000 volunteers picked up over 900,000 pounds of trash and 104,892 pounds of recyclables. Volunteers also help compile data about garbage for the largest research project in the world. The data that is collected is used to change laws and to educate people about how to be conscientious consumers.

For example: Did you know that in the East Bay smoking related garbage is no longer the most numerous debris item? Now it's pieces of plastic. Plastic doesn't go away; it just gets broken into smaller pieces. But regardless of size, plastic can disrupt whole ecosystems and be fatal to many plants and animals.

Please arrive promptly at 9:00 a.m. to get some coffee, sign waivers, and receive a safety training. Bring your own personal non-disposable water bottle, gloves, sunscreen and a hat, and we will provide bags, tally cards and raffle prizes. Groups of ten or more need to pre-register by calling 510-981-6720.
