Berkeley, California (Monday, July 28, 2008) - Despite a fire 40 miles away, the City of Berkeley’s Tuolumne Camp is fully operational.

“At this time, the fire presents no danger to Berkeley Tuolumne Camp or the more than 260 campers who are currently residing there,” said Scott Ferris, “There are also no highway closures that affect transportation routes from the Bay Area to Groveland.”

Berkeley Recreation staff members are in regular communication with both the U.S. Department of Forestry and the County Sheriff’s Department. If an evacuation order is given, campers will have at least 72 hours notice. The City will keep up-to-date information regarding the fire and potential evacuations posted on the City’s website at www.CityofBerkeley.info.

The Mariposa County Telegraph Fire started about 50 miles away from Berkeley’s Tuolumne Camp. The fire is 40 miles away from camp and is moving away from camp. The fire is also 40% contained as of Wednesday afternoon.

For specific information regarding the Telegraph Fire, please contact the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection at (209) 966-4784 or visit http://www.fire.ca.gov/index_incidents_others.php. You may also call the City of Berkeley’s Recreation Division Hotline at (510) 981-6708 for an update.
