Five Berkeley after-school programs host events to encourage traffic safety for kids

Berkeley, California (Friday, March 21, 2008) - Students at five after-school programs in Berkeley will be able to learn and practice bicycle and pedestrian safety through a "Safe Moves City," which is sponsored by the City of Berkeley Injury Prevention Program and Safe Moves, a non-profit organization. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 

The "Safe Moves City" is a miniature city safety course that is designed to create problem-solving experiences from different traffic environments for each grade level. Grade K-3 will act as pedestrians in the city and grades 4-5 will act as both pedestrians and bikers in the mock city. More information is available at www.safemoves.org. Safe Moves has been scheduled in a number of BUSD after-school programs for the current school year. Events are scheduled as follows:

Safe Moves Safety Course:

Monday; March 17, 2008; Washington Elementary School (1:45 p.m.-4:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, March 18, 2008; LeConte Elementary School (1:45 p.m. -4:30 p.m.)

Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Berkeley Arts Magnet (2:45 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.)

Friday, March 21, 2008, Thousand Oaks Elementary School (2:45 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.)

Wednesday, April 23, 2008, Malcolm X Elementary School (1:45 p.m.- 4:15 p.m.)
