City's investigation of environmental violations lead to 30 days in jail and significant fines

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, March 19, 2008) - The Alameda County District Attorney's (DA) office has reached an agreement with Mr. Frank Ghahyaz, owner of Jetco Motors in Berkeley, for a probation violation stemming from a June 2007 inspection where the City of Berkeley Toxics Management Division found numerous environmental violations of local and state codes for stormwater pollution prevention and hazardous waste management.

In 2002, Mr. Ghahyaz was charged with illegal transportation and disposal of hazardous waste. He was sentenced to five years probation, fined a penalty of $50,000, and ordered to comply with all environmental regulations.

Since that time and most recently in June 2007, Toxics Management received numerous complaints and conducted inspections where additional violations were observed, including discharge of oil into the storm drain and improper management of hazardous waste. Mr. Ghahyaz was booked on probation violations and served 30 days in jail.

The recent agreement with the DA's office requires Mr. Ghahyaz to comply with all environmental regulations in the future.
