Berkeley, California (Thursday, May 10, 2007) - What if advertisements told us what was good about ourselves, instead of what was wrong with us?

Beginning May 10 and running through Friday, August 10, the public is invited to view artwork that strives to promote health and creativity and to counteract the substance abuse, racism, violence and socially destructive media imagery that is present in so much of mass media today.

The exhibition presents the work of 12 artists whose work has been used in Health Through Art (HTA) mass media campaigns designed to challenge media stereotypes and counteract the "blight of advertisements.”  HTA works to replace advertisements and their stereotypes with positive messages that encourage healthy choices for individuals and the community. The artists submitted their art through schools, community or cultural centers and other arts organizations.

They range in age from nine to sixty years old, and come from many areas of Alameda County. Each of the submitted pieces has become part of HTA’s 17-year long campaign to challenge messages conveyed through mainstream media about racism, violence and substance abuse. They have been reproduced on BART interiors, bus benches, bus shelters, and neighborhood billboards.

The 1947 Center Street Gallery is a public space located in the lobby of the City office building at 1947 Center Street, located between Milvia Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. This gallery space is a project of the City of Berkeley’s Public Art Program and is funded through the City’s 1.5% for Art.
