Berkeley, California (Wednesday, November 29, 2006) - Berkeley Fire Department's New Hills Fire Station is now operational. As of 6pm, 11/21, the Berkeley Fire Department started operating out of the new fire station located at 3000 Shasta Road in the Berkeley Hills. This jointly staffed fire station, the City's first fully green building, has been in process for approval and construction since 1992. The Hills Fire Station is not a seasonal station, but is fully staffed year round by Berkeley Fire Department’s Engine 7.

During high fire hazard days the Berkeley Fire Department and East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department may jointly staff the station. The new Hills Fire Station replaces Berkeley’s old Station 7, which was built in 1939. Engine 7 took its last call from the old station yesterday morning and its first call from the new location last night. The new station, strategically located on a major thoroughfare in the Berkeley Hills, is much larger, is seismically safe, and has emergency power. All of these elements were missing in the old station. The old Station 7 is no longer staffed as a fire station, and is being evaluated for other uses for the fire department. An open house is being planned for early next year at the new station.

For more information, please contact Deputy Fire Chief David Orth via  telephone at 981-5501.
