Berkeley High youth teaching youth with an emphasis on drugs, alcohol, sexual health, and vehicle / bike safety

Berkeley, California (Thursday, November 02, 2006) -  In partnership with the Berkeley High School Health Center (BHSHC) and the Office of Traffic Safety, the City of Berkeley Teen Injury Prevention Program announces their effort to educate High School and Middle School students on the risks associated with sex, drugs, alcohol and driving. PASSHEN is a  comprehensive program that relies on youth educators who enter classrooms to present information on important public health issues.

The Peer Educators are committed to making a positive difference in their community. This school year, the Teen Injury Prevention Program recruited 14 peer health educators to offer classroom presentations to Berkeley High School students, Berkeley Technology Academy students, and to the Berkeley Middle Schools. In addition to sexual health information, drugs, and alcohol, the Peer Education presentations emphasize the importance of sober driving, seat belts, helmets and other safety equipment. PASSHEN has found that teens are more likely to listen to their peers when it comes to sex, drugs, and safe driving.

Kickoff prevention/education activities include participating in the Drugs and Youth Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, November 8th at Berkeley Technology Academy, 2701 Martin Luther King Jr. Way.  Join us in this important prevention effort! Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the City of Berkeley AIDS Program.
