Many more possible

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, October 24, 2006) - The Berkeley Police Department reports 25 arrests were made last week during a three-night operation to rid the streets of persons under the influence of controlled substances. Driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoints are common in Berkeley, but this program was designed to identify persons suspected of being under the influence of controlled substances.

Persons who showed objective signs of being under the influence were brought to the Public Safety Building for further evaluations. About 25 officers from BPD, UCPD and other local agencies participated. Berkeley PD Officer Jennifer Tate, who coordinated the efforts, reported the program was successful in getting the word out to people on the street that police were doing controlled substance enforcement.

Officer Tate hopes to continue this program on a regular basis, as the department receives numerous and continual complaints of people being under the influence of controlled substances in the Telegraph Ave. and downtown areas.

Upon conviction, persons arrested for being under the influence of controlled substances (misdemeanor) may be sentenced to serve not less than 90 days or more that one-year in county jail. Many of the people arrested during this program expressed interest in entering into a drug rehabilitation program.
