August 1 - November 1, 2006, 1947 Center Street Lobby

Berkeley, California (Thursday, August 31, 2006) - The Public Art Program of the City of Berkeley Civic Arts Commission is pleased to announce the addition of a new gallery located on the first floor of 1947 Center Street in Berkeley. This gallery is open to the public during normal business hours. This new gallery joins the city sponsored Addison Street Windows Gallery and the public areas of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Building. A list of artworks and artists and a Curator’s Statement is available at the reception desk and through the Civic Arts web page http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/civicarts/publicart.htm

The opening exhibit in the lobby of the city building at 1947 Center Street is an extension of the popular recent show, “From Isolation to Connection” at the Addison Street Windows Gallery. The artwork by students from Bonita House's Creative Living Center and Berkeley Mental Health were created through Berkeley Adult School’s off-site Art Classes. The art pieces reflect the personal and unique expressions of a diverse group of artists with exceptional talent and a passion for their work. Each student is matched with materials that suite their particular needs, facilitating the translation of their ideas into art.  “From Isolation to Connection” has been shown at the Addison Street Windows Gallery, National Institute of Arts and Disabilities, and Berkeley Art Center. In April 2006, images of works by individual artists were digitally projected at the San Francisco De Young Theater at an all day event for Artists with Disabilities.

The above city sponsored art galleries are part of the Public Art Program of the City of Berkeley 1.5% for Art.

Any artist or group of artists interested in showing at the 1947 Center Street Gallery is encouraged to call (510) 981-7546. For more information about this exhibition please visit the Civic Arts web page http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/civicarts/publicart.htm or contact Mary Ann Merker, Civic Arts Coordinator at (510) 981-7533. This exhibition is wheelchair accessible.
