Fourth of July Activities in Berkeley

Berkeley, California (Thursday, June 22, 2006) - Now that summer has arrived, Berkeley Fire Department reminds everyone to be especially careful with anything that can start a fire. Last winter’s heavy rains led to increased growth of grasses and other foliage, leading to more fire fuel all around us. Take extra caution with potential ignition sources, such as cigarettes and barbecues. Additionally, care should be taken when using small power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters or chain saws, since hot catalytic converters also spark fires. Fireworks are another potential hazard.

All fireworks are illegal in the City of Berkeley, including the “safe and sane” types, such as Sparklers. Fireworks are restricted for good reasons – they start fires in dry brush and grass and cause burns, mostly to children. A new brochure, The Truth About Fireworks, can be viewed on Berkeley Police Department’s website at http://www.cityofberkeley.info/police.

Leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy the Berkeley Fourth of July festivities and fireworks display beginning at dusk in the Berkeley Marina. Keep in mind that University Avenue at 6th Street, as well as the I-80 off ramps at Gilman and University, will be closed when Marina parking is filled, possibly from 5:00 p.m., until midnight. Consider biking, carpooling, or walking across the bike/pedestrian bridge to the Marina
