Berkeley, California (Thursday, April 27, 2006) - The City of Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is offering free emergency preparedness classes to anyone who lives or works in Berkeley.  The urgency for all of us in the Bay Area to continue preparing for earthquakes is validated by the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientists who conclude that there is a 62% probability of at least one magnitude 6.7 or greater quake striking the Bay area before 2032.

OES is offering a series of free preparedness classes, known as Community Emergency Response Training (CERT). Classes range from hands-on use of a fire extinguisher, to learning how to make a splint, to learning how to identify signs of structural damage. CERT classes are free and open to anyone who lives or works in Berkeley. The  May and June classes (all on Saturdays) are scheduled as follows:

May 13, 10:00-12:00, Basic Personal Preparedness – 997 Cedar Street

May 13, 1:30-3:30, Basic Personal Preparedness – 997 Cedar Street

May 20, 9:00-12:00, Fire Suppression – Berkeley Marina, 201 University Avenue

June 3, 9:00-12:00, Disaster First Aid – 997 Cedar Street

June 10, 9:00-1:00, Light Search & Rescue – 997 Cedar Street

For additional information, or to register for one or all of these classes, call 510-981-5506, TDD 981-5799, or visit the OES website at www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/fire/oes.html.
