Berkeley Public Library Honors Abraham Lincoln Brigade

Berkeley, California (Friday, February 10, 2006) - Berkeley Public Library will honor the Abraham Lincoln Brigade on the 70th anniversary of its participation in the Spanish Civil War. These soldiers from the U.S. joined volunteers from all over the world to battle fascism in the 1930s. Many continued to work for social justice throughout their lives. On Saturday, March 4th, from 2pm-5:00pm, at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (downtown Berkeley ), join us for a film and panel discussion. Also, view Richard Bermack’s photo exhibit of these courageous soldiers of justice.

At 2pm, Academy Award nominated filmmaker Judy Montell will present her recent film Professional Revolutionary: Life and Times of Saul Wellman, followed at 3:30pm by presentations by Milt Wolff, last commander of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, with his memoir, Member of the Working Class; Richard Bermack, photographer and author of Frontlines of Social Change: Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; and, Bruce Barthol, musical director of the San Francisco Mime Troup, who will talk about how the songs of the Spanish Civil War inspired generations of activists.

The Abraham Lincoln Brigade photos will be on exhibit from February 21st – March 6th, in the Historic Lobby at Berkeley Public’s Central Library.
