First in a Series of Community Workshops

Berkeley, California (Thursday, January 12, 2006) - In partnership with AC Transit and BART, and funded by a Transportation for Livable Communities Planning and Community Design Grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the City of Berkeley will hold the first of a series of community workshops to create a new design Plan for the Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza and adjacent transit area. The workshop will be held on Monday, January 23, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center Multipurpose Room (1901 Hearst Ave. at Martin Luther King Blvd.). The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The City, its project partners, and its consultants are preparing a comprehensive transportation and urban design plan for the Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza and adjacent transit area that updates the existing design. The primary goal of the BART Plaza and Transit Area Design Plan is to develop an urban design and access plan that will improve Downtown’s function as a transportation hub and support its continued commercial and cultural revitalization. At this first community workshop, participants will be able to provide input on the goals and objectives of the project, identify problem areas and potential solutions, and review an existing conditions analysis of the project area.

For more information about the project or to receive notification of future community workshops, please contact Kara Vuicich, Associate Planner, City of Berkeley Transportation Division at (510) 981-7065 or kvuicich@ci.berkeley.ca.us. You can also visit the Transportation Division website for additional information: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/transportation/.

To request a sign language interpreter, assistive-listening device, real-time captioning or other accommodation for the community workshop, please call 981-7065 (voice) or 981-6903 (TDD).  Please provide at least five working days' notice to ensure availability at the meeting. Please refrain from wearing scented products to public meetings.
